5 Tips for Getting Your Certifying Births for DONA Certification

After attending your DONA-approved doula workshop, getting your certifying births can feel the most logistically complicated step in DONA-certification!

Don’t worry, though. We’ve got a handful of tips to help you feel confident in getting your certifying birth experience.

Doula support during labor.

Tip 1: Reach Out to Your Personal Network

Sometimes the best connections are close to home:

  • Let friends, family, and social media followers know you're looking to attend births.

  • Post a clear and kind announcement on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or local parenting groups.

  • Include that you’re a certifying doula with DONA and are offering a discounted rate for a limited number of births.

**Did you know that we offer a Certifying Birth Mentorship here at Flow of Life? That’s right - as a part of *your* personal network, we are excited to offer several opportunities a season for aspiring doulas to get birth experience under the mentorship of a Flow of Life team member.

Tip 2: Collaborate with Local Providers & Birth Professionals

  • Introduce yourself to OBs, midwives, chiropractors, prenatal yoga teachers, lactation consultants, etc. Let them know you're a certifying doula and available for referrals.

  • Ask to leave business cards or flyers in clinics or wellness centers.

  • Some hospitals have doula programs or allow volunteers—worth checking!

Tip 3: Join Local Birth or Parenting Groups

  • Connect with Facebook groups or Pregnancy and Parenting Support Groups.

  • Participate in conversations, offer tips, and share your availability as a student doula.

  • Community centers, pregnancy circles, and baby stores often have bulletin boards for birth workers.

Tip 4: Offer a Special “Training Doula” Package

  • Create a simple flyer or social media post offering certification-support services at a reduced rate.

  • Highlight what you can offer (prenatal visits, continuous birth support, postpartum follow-up).

  • Keep it clear that you’re professionally trained and completing certification.

Tip 5: Partner with Local Organizations

  • Reach out to nonprofits or agencies serving families with limited access to support—some welcome volunteer doulas or doulas-in-training.

  • Offer your services to shelters, teen parenting programs, or community health centers.

We hope that these tips take some of the guess work out of getting your certifying births for DONA certification. You’ve got this!
