Here’s a quick overview of the steps to DONA certification:

Complete a DONA-approved birth doula workshop

Tip: Have you completed our Embodied Birth Worker Training? Then this step is done!

Do you need to find a workshop? Check out our trainings and register today!  

Complete an approved childbirth education course 

Tip: Our Embodied Birth Worker Training includes approved childbirth education, so, if you’ve done our training, you’ve completed this step as well! 

Looking for a training that includes an approved childbirth education course? Check out our trainings and register today!  

Complete an approved lactation support course 

Tip: Find a lactation support course through DONA, making sure that it’s at least 3 hours 

Attend and document three birth support experiences

Complete the required reading 

Tip: You need two position papers and four books to complete this requirement. 

Complete a self-assessment questionnaire and a resource & referral list for your community

Tip: The self-assessment is in your DONA Doula Manual. 

Register as a DONA International member at dona.org 

Submit the application with all required documents & pay the fee.

Tip: The sample for this form is in the back of the DONA Doula Manual.
